Subject: New Guest Network Registration System
The process for handling guest access to the University’s network will change beginning January 15, 2008. The current system permits guests to obtain two weeks of access to the data network by providing a valid e-mail address. The new guest registration system will require all guests (i.e. individuals who have not been issued a University NetID) of the University’s network to obtain a GuestID before being allowed to access the University’s wired or wireless network.
It is the first phase in meeting the University’s security objective of requiring authentication for all users of the University’s network in order to provide accountability for the actions of users while on the University of Connecticut network.
Why are we doing this?
For University faculty, staff and students who have been issued a NetID and who have registered the network resources (PC, MAC, Router, etc.) that have been assigned to them, UITS is able to consult the NetReg database to determine the responsible individual when investigating security incidents.
Currently, no similar mechanism exists for handling guests of our network who have not been issued a NetID and users of public access workstations or devices that have been registered to a common ID.
Who does this affect?
The new guest registration system affects any individuals who have not been issued a NetID and who wish to access the University’s wired or wireless network using their own network resource (e.g.laptop computer).
The new system will not impact guests who are issued a NetID.
The new system will not impact users of public access workstations during this first phase of implementation.
How will this new system work?
The system will work slightly differently depending on whether the guest makes his/her access needs known to a sponsor (i.e. a current University employee with a NetID) prior to arriving at the University or whether the guest is a walk-in without a sponsor.
Details concerning the new process may be found on the web page, Guest Registration Help.
Please note that the best way to ensure that guests have immediate access to the University’s network when they arrive on campus is to have a sponsor authorize access prior to the guest arriving on campus.
If you anticipate receiving a guest to the University on or after January 15th, who might require access to our network, it is very important that you authorize access for them as a sponsor as soon as possible prior to their arrival. Guests who have not received their GuestID prior to their arrival will need to go to one of the ID Centers to obtain their GuestID. In addition, limited guest access (less than 3 hours) will be available through any employee sponsor.
If you need assistance with obtaining a GuestID for a guest, please contact the UITS Help Center by telephoning 860.486.4357 between 8AM and 5PM, Monday – Friday.
